Black Friday 2014 by the Numbers
Date november 2014
One of the biggest shopping weekends of the year is nearly upon us and predictions are mixed for this critical retail event. Many expect the lackluster retail performance that characterized the back-to-school shopping season to continue, while others see the tailwinds of an improving employment picture and increasing consumer confidence driving a steady performance this holiday season. The gloves are off among retailers to gain market share and distinguish themselves from the competition. Many will open their doors on Thanksgiving itself and prolong Black Friday promotions throughout the weekend and even into the following week.
While sales will likely be flat or slightly up over last year, retailers will have to work hard to win those dollars. As a result of the high level and long duration of promotional activity gross margins for many retailers will be negatively impacted. Below we summarize Thanksgiving Weekend by the Numbers based on National Retail Federation data from the prior year and our predictions for this season's performance.
